Vector Control Products

Vector control has been proven to be one of the most effective means of preventing the transmission of malaria and other insect -borne diseases, and is one of the key elements of the Global Strategic Plan of Roll Back Malaria 2005 -2015.

The malaria vector control and personal protection strategies for malaria prevention put forward six areas for action:

1. select proven technologies appropriate to the local setting
2. quickly achieve high coverage
3. sustain that high coverage
4. target the most vulnerable groups.
5. ensure coverage is with high quality products and services
6. continuously develop and optimize prevention technologies and delivery mechanisms

The plan goes on to say ‘In almost all malaria-endemic areas, ITNs (Insecticide Treated Nets), in particular LLINs (Long Lasting Insecticide Nets) are the priority intervention for RBM in the short to medium term. LLINs offer proven efficacy and can reach all target groups even when infrastructure is minimal.
