The Olyset Story
Sumitomo Chemical pioneered a revolutionary technology to develop a net that effectively prevents mosquito biting, lasts for a long time and resists both washing and tearing. Olyset® incorporates the insecticide permethrin into the actual fibres of the net, and releases it slowly over a number of years. The Olyset net passed the rigorous testing procedure known as WHOPES (WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme). This involved extensive laboratory and field studies held under scientific scrutiny, and a commitment to quality assurance through the publication of agreed specifications. Olyset was the first LLIN to pass WHOPES and earn WHO’s recommendation.

Olyset is unique in many ways:
- Guaranteed to last at least five years – latest research indicates that a seven- or eight-year life is often achievable.
- Ready to use – never needs treatment
- Tough – Olyset uses polyethylene technology that makes the net stronger and more tear resistant than polyester nets
- Wash proof – Olyset is designated as a LLIN by WHO – this means that it remains effective even when washed twenty times.
- Maximum ventilation – Wide mesh improves air flow
- Controlled release technology – unlike polyester nets, the insecticide in Olyset is contained within the fibre, not coated on the outside. This technology provides a slow release of the active ingredient which continues to control mosquitoes for more than five years
- Quadruple insecticide effect on mosquitoes – bite inhibition, repellency, knockdown, kill. All contribute to protection from biting mosquitoes and other insects
The paper Development of Olyset Net as a Tool for Malaria Control provides a detailed technical and production history of Olyset.
